Vuoden perhe – Family of The Year is a dark comedy about a perfect nuclear family, where the father’s word is law, and the appearances are kept at all costs. Adherence to nuclear family expectations eventually takes on grim proportions and the comedy turns to horror.
Mum, Dad, Laura and Little Petrus form The Family of The Year. Nothing can threaten their twinkling family happiness, because a wall has been built around Finland. All peculiar and criminal matters, such as war, are safely excluded. Inside it is safe. Inside family members support each other in parenting, in taking care of marriage and in eating together as a family. Nothing can shake this happiness. Nothing.
Family of The Year deals with the destructive power of the pursuit of normality, violence against women in the heteronormative nuclear family model, and emotional violence in families.
